Eoin May Reviews: Ed Brown First Responder EDC Knife

You don’t have to be a First Responder to respond to an emergency.

Ed Brown is an American company that produces some of the nicest 1911s I have ever got the opportunity to shoot, but as I recently reported, they’ve ventured into the knife market as well. They recently partnered with Hogue Knives to create their first knife in their new line, and they just released their second one: the First Responder. This new knife from Ed Brown is hefty and tough. Just like it says on the box, it is made for First Responders … but it’s a heck of a blade for everyday (EDC) carry for the rest of us, too.

The Ed Brown First Responder is a thick and heavy knife made for using and abusing. The blade is a sheepsfoot style measuring in at a little over 3” long, made with Bohler N680 Stainless steel with a black Cerakote finish. Bohler N680 stainless steel is defined by its durability and corrosion resistance, and the sheepsfoot-style blade means you won’t have to worry about a tip breaking or any flaws near the tip of your blade. To add to the durability the knife comes with Hogue’s patented Ambidextrous Able Lock, which is one of the strongest locks on the market. The knife comes with black G10 scales that have the Snakeskin and EB logo right in the center. The scales are super comfortable and have crazy grip. The knife also comes with a reversible deep carry pocket clip.

Now let’s talk about some of the features that make it an ideal First Responder’s knife. The blade comes with partial serrations capable of making cuts that the traditional sharpened edge cannot. The knife also comes with a seat belt cutter on the spine of the knife that is thumb stud deployed. Many knives that have a seat belt cutter aren’t comfortable to handle, but the First Responder’s blade’s cutter is low-profile enough that you can’t even tell it’s there. You can get a solid grip on the knife and really not even feel the thumb stud.

One exciting feature that Ed Brown added to this knife is a carbide glass breaker on the tail of the handle … and believe me, it works! I broke a window with a satisfying CRASH, but of course it then became necessary to break some more “just to make sure.”

This knife is a beast. You can feel the quality and durability as soon as you pick it up. If you are a person who saves lives on the Police force, Fire Department, Military, or if you are a First Responder, first I would like to thank you for your service and everything you do to help this wonderful country, and second this knife would be a very reliable knife to carry. This knife is comfortable, sharp, and comes equipped with things that you may need while you are on the job or maybe in your everyday life.

The thing about emergencies is that nobody ever tells you when they’re going to happen, so you’ll never know when you need the First Responder until the metabolic by-products have hit the oscillating air delivery device.
