Backpack Gun, Truck Gun, Nightstand Gun: The New Springfield Kuna Tri-Lug

What’s up with the Kuna?

Springfield Armory dropped the Kuna on the U.S. market in April 2025, and it immediately stood out in a crowded field of 9mm large-format pistols and pistol-caliber carbines. Developed in partnership with Croatia’s HS Produkt which is the same company behind Springfield’s Hellion, Hellcat, and Echelon lines, the Kuna takes its name from the European pine marten, Croatia’s national animal. The original design first appeared as a .40 S&W submachine gun that won a contract with São Paulo’s military police in Brazil before the 9mm semi-auto pistol version arrived stateside.

At its core, the Kuna is a compact roller-delayed blowback 9mm PDW-style pistol with a 6-inch cold radial hammer-forged barrel, a monolithic aluminum upper with integral M-LOK, fully ambidextrous controls, hybrid flip-up sights, and two 30-round translucent magazines. The roller-delayed system, echoing the legendary HK MP5 also uses a locking roller to delay bolt movement, allowing a lighter reciprocating mass and noticeably softer recoil than typical direct-blowback PCCs. Launch pricing started around $999 for the base model and $1,149 with the Strike Industries FSA folding brace. Overall most praise its value, reliability, accuracy, and shootability, often calling it one of the better budget roller-delayed options compared to far more expensive HK SP5 or AP5 clones. It has been well-accepted as a practical, fun, and capable platform rather than just another AR-9 clone.

Now Springfield has expanded the family with the Kuna Tri-Lug, announced in late August 2026. The new models keep the same roller-delayed action, ambidextrous layout, and compact dimensions but replace the original 1/2×28 threaded muzzle and brake with an integrated three-lug mount machined directly into the 6-inch barrel. The base Tri-Lug pistol (KN9069BTL) carries an MSRP of $1,179; the version with the Strike Industries FSA brace (KN9069BTL-FSA) is $1,330. Both are also available in 10-round configurations for restricted states.

Specs

Heckler & Koch introduced the three-lug interface on the MP5 around 1966. It was originally intended for flash hiders, blank-firing adapters, and grenade-launcher attachments. Interestingly the U.S. Navy-pattern MP5 barrels added threads in addition to the lugs. Dedicated suppressor use came later, notably through work by companies like Knight’s Armament in the 1980s. Today the system is the de facto standard for many pistol-caliber suppressors because the relatively low pressure and heat of 9mm allow a robust, simple lockup that holds zero well and stays secure under sustained fire. Springfield’s implementation machines the lugs directly into the barrel rather than using an adapter, which is as solid as it gets.

Folded, the pistol is only about 15.5 inches long. Add the official Springfield Armory Kuna Adjustable Folding Stock (about $200) after a Form 1 and you have a compact SBR whose stock folds for storage or transport. That combination works as a backpack gun you can stash and deploy quickly, a nightstand gun with 30 rounds of 9mm subsonic and low recoil for home defense, or a truck gun that doesn’t eat up cabin space. The folding stock/brace keeps the overall package short even as an SBR or braced pistol, while the tri-lug lets you snap a suppressor on or off in seconds depending on the mission, everything from quiet for home or range use, unsuppressed when you want maximum compactness or don’t need the extra length.

The roller-delayed action stays soft and controllable whether suppressed or not, and the platform’s modest size and weight make it easy to handle from awkward positions inside a vehicle or from a bedside.

Perfect Timing for an SBR Build

The $200 NFA tax stamp on short-barreled rifles and suppressors dropped to $0 as of January 1, 2026. Registration and Form 1/Form 4 processes still exist in most cases, but the extra tax is gone. That makes this an ideal moment to buy the pistol version of the Kuna Tri-Lug and add the factory adjustable folding stock directly from Springfield Armory. You get a purpose-built SBR with a proven QD suppressor interface and a stock designed specifically for the gun with no aftermarket guesswork required. There has rarely been a better window to assemble a compact, suppressor-ready 9mm SBR.

The original 1/2×28 threaded barrel (with its multi-port brake) still makes more sense for a lot of owners. If you already have a collection of 1/2×28 direct thread suppressors, muzzle brakes, or flash hiders, you can run them immediately without buying extra adapters. The threaded version also gives you more future flexibility: you can add different QD systems (KeyMo, ASR, Xeno, etc.) via inexpensive thread-on adapters, or simply leave a compact brake on the gun if you don’t suppress it often. Shooters who want maximum adaptability or who aren’t committed to the 3-lug ecosystem will probably be happier with the first-generation barrel.

In short, buy the Tri-Lug if suppressor speed and a factory-integrated mount matter most. Stick with the original threaded model if you already have threaded gear or want the widest range of muzzle-device options.
